Stray- An Exploration of
Aberdeen's Architecture
A body of work which started as drawing studies of buildings, mostly ones
I had found around Aberdeen, then developed to become the creation of a lino print,
suitable for use on souvenirs or merchandise for Aberdeen City.
During my time in Aberdeen, I found myself becoming inspired by the architecture and environments around the city.
I started this project by sketching a range of buildings I found interesting- mostly ones I found in Aberdeen, but some are studies of images found online.
I focused mainly on using line, tone and shape, and wanted to be loose and spontaneous so for a majority of these drawings I limited myself to only using pen, and did not create a base sketch.
I then produced some more refined studies of architecture, exploring colour and tone.
The rough monochromatic acrylic painting sparked the idea for me to create a print which could be used on merchandise and souvenirs for Aberdeen.
I created several lino prints on A4 paper, experimenting with different colour gradients instead of solid colour blocks in order to create more of a sense of depth.
The three prints below are the ones I took forward to the final mockups.
Below are the final mockups showing how my design would look if used for merchandising purposes, on a notebook, a tote bag, and a t-shirt.
I decided to colour all of the items grey- as this colour is associated with the granite buildings in Aberdeen. The desaturated background also works well to make the colours of my illustration stand out.
